Driverless Car Comes Close To Human Lap Time As It Laps Berlin Circuit At 124mph

As we all know, the heart of a race car is in its driver.

However, this Roborace car is hammering around a track in Germany at speeds of up to 124mph – with no one behind the wheel.

The footage was taken during a high-speed run of the Formula E track in Berlin.

Somehow, the driverless car manages to expertly navigate the track, clipping apexes like a pro and coming within inches of the track’s boundaries.

According to Roborace, the car was just eight per cent off the mark of a manned race car. It managed 14 corners of the 1.2-mile track, all the while being controlled by sensors and on-board computers.

It’s powered by four electric motors – but that isn’t the most interesting technology on board. It features five lidar radars, 18 ultrasonic sensors and two optical speed sensors.
