Lotus reveals yet another special-edition Exige
Lotus seems to have developed a knack for making special editions to discreetly hide the fact it hasn’t made an all-new car in ages.
Every other month it feels like there’s another ‘Cup’ this and another ‘Cup’ that – usually for the Elise and Exige.
Now it’s flipped a coin again and decided to give its latest ‘treatment’ to the Exige. So here you have it: the ‘new’ Exige Cup 430, and yes – it looks just like the Exige Cup 380 that was unveiled earlier this year.
Lotus labels it its ‘most extreme Exige ever conceived’, and there may actually be some truth in this, as the Norfolk-based manufacturer says it’s the fastest road car ever to lap its Hethel test circuit.
The 3.5-litre supercharged V6 engine produces 424bhp – 49bhp more than the Exige Cup 380 – and because it weighs just 1,059kg, it can accelerate from 0-60mph in only 4.2 seconds and on to a top speed of 180mph.
Jean-Marc Gales, chief executive of Group Lotus plc, said:
It will go down as a record-breaking car in the history of Lotus.
Hmmm, we’re sorry Mr Gales, but we disagree. As fast and impressive to drive as we’re sure the Exige Cup 430 is, we reckon it’ll just go down in history as yet another special edition.
Now please, Lotus. You know you’re nearing the end of being able to raid your parts bin, so can we have an all-new car from you asap? Pretty please…?
