Audi you like that? Rolls-Royce CEO takes a shot at Bentley’s Bentayga
There’ll be handbags at dawn somewhere between Goodwood and Crewe.
The reason? A not-so-subtle shot taken at Bentley’s Bentayga SUV by Rolls-Royce head honcho Torsten Müller-Ötvös.
While speaking to Automotive News Europe about the Crewe firm’s upcoming Cullinan SUV, Müller-Ötvös said:
We are not using mass-manufactured body shells. That limits what you can do on the design side and it undermines exclusivity massively. You don’t want a camouflaged [Audi] Q7 in that segment. You want to have a true Rolls-Royce.
That’s factual fighting talk, because the Bentayga shares the MLB Evo platform also used by the Porsche Cayenne, Lamborghini Urus and – of course – the Audi Q7.
So there’s certainly some merit to having a bespoke platform for the Cullinan. However, all Bentley chief exec Wolfgang Dürheimer has to do to even the score is mention the Rolls-Royce Ghost, which borrows heavily from parent company BMW’s 7 Series.
Perhaps Müller-Ötvös should be more careful about throwing stones in glass houses…
